Irene M. Phillips, 72, passed away on Saturday, May 27, at her home in Plainview of
Ovarian Cancer.
She was born Irene Mae Schmidt on May 30, 1944, in Rochester to Paul and Phyllis
Schmidt. She graduated from Plainview Community School in 1962.
On May 23, 1964 she married Dwight “Woody” Wood. They had one daughter Kristi Kay.
They were divorced in 1975.
Irene worked different jobs including Day Care, Manager of Casey’s General Store in
Plainview, High Plains, Plainview Milk Products and she owned and operated Fifth Street
Elder Care. Irene enjoyed spending time with her family, fishing, garage sales, playing
cards and games and going on drives.
She is survived by her daughter, Kristi (Michael) Gernes of Plainview; her ex son-in-law
Randy Bartsh; grandchildren, Lane, Kody and Madison Bartsh; step grandchildren, Noah
and Gage Gernes; great-grandchildren, Autumn Irene and Nolan Lane Bartsh; One
sister, Darlene (Ronald) Goergen of Elgin and one brother, Burton Schmidt of Oronoco;
several nieces and nephews and special friend, Larry Van Dusseldorp of Britt, Iowa.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Phyllis Schmidt; one nephew, Keith
Goergen and Dwight Wood and Bill Phillips.
Funeral service is Saturday, June 3, 11:00 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in
Plainview with Rev. Phil Augustine officiating. Burial is at Greenwood Cemetery in
Plainview. Visitation is Friday, June 2, 5-8 p.m. at Schad & Zabel Funeral Home in
Plainview and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.
