He attended Rochester Junior College for two years and received a full tuition scholarship to Princeton University.  He was unable to attend due to family circumstances.  He took over the education with correspondence courses in law. while raising six children. Al was active in many organizations:  Olmsted County’s Outstanding Farmer Award in 1957; Dairy Herd Improvement Association;  SE MN Farm Management Assn.;  Eyota Farm Bureau; Olmsted County Consolidated Breeders Co-op;  Eyota Co-op Creamery board;  Olmsted County Chapter of the American Red Cross;  Eastwood Bank board member 28 years;  Eyota Elevator Board;  Eyota Ambulance Board;  Rochester Kiwanis;  Eyota Lions’ Club;  Olmsted Republican Party;  Mayor of Eyota for 6 years; Authored many editorials for the Olmsted County Journal and was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Eyota. Al loved his hometown of Eyota.  He contributed land to the Eyota Kids Korner and was instrumental in the development of hundreds of homes on the south side of Eyota.  His final contribution at 84 years of age, was the Eyota Market grocery store which he felt was essential for the community.  Al was honored as Citizen of the Year in 2007. Al loved politics and debating, in general. He was an active member of the Republican Party serving in the MN House of Representatives from 1962-1972. Al was an avid collector of elephant memorabilia, mugs, & music boxes.  He loved music and taught himself to play the organ. If he found an electric organ at an auction, he was sure to buy it, often giving it away to someone else.  He loved traveling and visited over 10 countries. Al loved learning and was a voracious reader;  he especially loved books on history, different cultures and the law. He married Margaret (Margie) Dubbels, September 25, 1993 in Eyota.  Though retired, he continued helping out on the farm, building homes and developing land in Eyota. Al is survived by his wife, Margie, of Eyota; sons, Robert (Ann) Schumann of Apple Valley, Glen (Cindy) Schumann of Woodbury, and Wayne Schumann of Eyota; daughters, Nancy Thoma of Willmar, Donna (Darryl) Kollodge of Brooklyn Park, and Vicki (Christopher) Arendt of Eyota; step-children, Thomas (Dorla) Dubbels of Eyota, Curtis (Peggy) Dubbels of Kasson, Zane (Marie) Dubbels of Eyota, Joel (Dawn) Dubbels of Rochester and Amy (Randy) Renken of Eyota; 7 grandchildren; 15 step-grandchildren; 1 great-grandson; 10 step-great- grandchildren; two sisters, Maxine Kaehler of St. Charles and Eileen Traeger of Mankato. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen, in 1991; his parents;  brothers,  Adolph and Milton and sister, Helen Woodward. The funeral will be at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Eyota at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 26 with reviewal one hour prior to the service. The visitation will be at Schad & Zabel Funeral Home in Eyota from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 25. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
