Hospital, following a brief battle with lung cancer. Allan Lorenz Schwanke was born April 17, 1943 in Wabasha, MN to Lorenz and Alma (Wilde) Schwanke. He lived at the Schwanke General Store in Potsdam. Allan attended Country School north of Potsdam and graduated from Elgin High School in 1960. In March of 1962, he joined the US Army and served 2 ½ years in Germany with the 3rd Armor Division. He was discharged in March, 1965.He worked briefly for Crenlo and then worked for the MN Department of Transportation for 42 years, retiring in 2008. On October 24, 1987 he married Rosemary Catlin at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Spring Valley. They lived south of Byron until moving to the family farm west of Elgin in 2005. Allan was a member of the Elgin American Legion and previously a member of the Byron American Legion. He was a Co-founding member of the Thunderbolts Motor Cycle Club, and an active member of East St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Rock Dell. He enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing, helping the area farmers with the harvest and “Putzin” around the farm. He is survived by his wife; Rosemary of Elgin, two sons; James (Stacy) Nelson of Rochester and Douglas (Lori) Schmidt of Theresa, NY, two daughters; Jacquelin (Duane) Rasmussen of Wykoff and Jennifer Schmidt of Elgin, and six grandchildren; Katie, Donald, Kayla, Sara, Kalli and Nora. He was preceded in death by his parents. A Memorial Service will be Tuesday, June 4, 2 pm at East St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Rock Dell. Burial will be at the Elgin Cemetery, with Military Graveside rites conducted by the Elgin American Legion. The visitation is Tuesday, 1 hour prior to the service at the church.
