Connie Mae (Bernhardt) Hammel (64) died Thursday, March 1, 2018, of respiratory failure from complications of metastatic breast cancer at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN. Connie was born on February 27, 1954 in Wabasha, MN, to Norton and Beatrice Bernhardt.  She was raised on her parents’ dairy farm in Viola Township.  She was baptized, confirmed, and married in St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in rural Eyota.  She graduated from Dover-Eyota High School in 1972.  She graduated from Rochester Area Vocational School with a Medical Secretary degree.  She then worked as a pharmacy technician at St. Mary’s Hospital.  In 1974 she married Kevin Hammel and together they dairy farmed in Viola Township for 40 years.  She was a member of the early Eyota Jaycees.  In 1984 and 1985 she was District 28 Director, Outstanding District Director and Minnesota State Gold Key Recipient of the Jaycees.  She served several years as a Dover-Eyota Declam judge.  She served her church in several capacities: as Council President, Sunday school teacher, Junior Choir Director, Womens Guild- president, treasurer, and secretary.  She also served on the Minnesota United Church of Christ Conference Realignment Committee.  She served as Eyota Days Parade Chair and as Eyota Days Co-chair.   She has worked as the Marketing Director at Arbor Gardens Senior Housing since 2002.  She and Kevin were the 2014 Viola Gopher Count King and Queen.  She had great love for life, her family, her church, and her neighborhood. Much appreciation to the staff of St. Mary’s Hospital (Lu) for their exceptional care for the last three days.  The staff even organized a small birthday party with choir for Connie on her 64th birthday. She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Kevin; her daughter Amy Clark and her family, Anthony and Jessenia Robbins, Austin, Jaithan, and Jemma, Amber Clark and Keith Clark; her son Damon, wife Casie and Reed, Carter, and Paige. Her sister and brother-in-law, Marlis and Jerry Knowlton. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister and brother-in-law Sharon and Tim Bowman. Service is Sunday, March 4, 2018, at St. Paul’s UCC Church in Eyota, 12941 County Road 9.  Visitation starting at 1:00 p.m. with service starting at 3:00 p.m. Memorials preferred to St. Paul’s United Church of Christ.
