Duane Arthur Haack passed away at his home on September 4, 2024, in the care of his loving wife Karen, and daughter Wendy and her husband Bill. He was born on July 17, 1939, in Rochester, Minnesota, to Clarence and Adeline (Wandrey) Haack. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Plainview, Minnesota
Duane attended Immanuel Lutheran School, Plainview, Minnesota, through the eighth grade, and graduated from Plainview Public High School in 1957. Following high school, he was employed by Zabel Grain Service and Mallard Seed Company, both located in Plainview. In March of 1963, he was drafted into the United States Army, where he served for two years, was honorably discharged in March of 1965, and became a member of the Plainview American Legion for over fifty years.
On May 3, 1965, Duane began a thirty year employment at IBM, Rochester. He retired from IBM on July 31, 1995, and he continued to work part-time when he was needed.
Duane and Karen (Zabel) Haack were married on June 19, 1965, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Plainview, Minnesota. They made their home in Plainview, where they raised their daughter Wendy.
He was a life-long member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Plainview, where he served on numerous boards and committees. He was honored to be a godfather to many. Duane had many hobbies. He liked gardening and enjoyed sharing the abundance with many people. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, attending garage sales, auctions, carpentry, remodeling projects, welding, target shooting, and tractors. He also loved working in his garage, where he had his own warehouse right at his fingertips. However, his favorite hobby was visiting with friends and relatives. It was a great joy for him when he could help people.
Survivors include his wife, Karen, one daughter Wendy (William) Hickey of Rochester, Minnesota; three sisters, Delores Sagissor of Houston, Texas, Marilyn (Don) Russo of Pacifica, California, and Anita Gilles of Hugo, Minnesota; one brother Gary (Valerie) of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister who died at birth, and a niece.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Plainview, with Pastor Phil Augustine officiating. The burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Plainview, with military graveside rites conducted by the Plainview American Legion Color Guard. The visitation will be Friday, September 20, 2024, 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Schad & Zabel Funeral Home in Plainview, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
