Elaine Bernhardt, 88, longtime Eyota resident, died Tuesday, February 16,
2016, at Madonna Towers in Rochester.
Elaine was born March 16, 1927 in Potsdam, MN, Olmsted County to Alfred
and Laura (Hoffman) Kitzman. She graduated from Elgin High School in 1944.
On June 10, 1947 she married Melvin Hanenberger and they farmed northwest
of Eyota. Melvin died September 7, 1992. On July 13, 1996 she married
Norton Bernhardt and they lived in Eyota. Norton died January 31, 2002.
Elaine had worked at the First National Bank, Michael’s Floral and American
Greeting Cards, all in Rochester. She enjoyed family gatherings, gardening,
making floral arrangements, bus tours, playing cards and country music.
She is survived by her children; David Hanenberger (Monya Lewis) of
Oronoco, Dean (Ginny) Hanenberger of Eyota and Diane (James) Hankes of
Keokuk, Iowa, step-daughters; Connie (Kevin) Hammel of Eyota and Marlys
(Jerry) Knowlton of Eyota, brothers; Milton (Marlys) Kitzman and Earl (Evie)
Kitzman both of Elgin, grandchildren; Chad Ihrke, Craig Ihrke, Danielle Coeper,
Brian Hanenberger, Dominic James Hanenberger, David Hanenberger Jr.,
Joshua Hanenberger, Ashley Hanenberger and Laura Hankes, great-
grandchildren; Carter Hankes, MacKenzie Coeper, Kaylynn Coeper, Ana
Coeper, Alex Coeper, Alex Ihrke and Rebecca Ihrke, seven step-grandchildren
and 14 step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, and 1 step-daughter,
Sharon Bowman.
Funeral service is Saturday, February 20, 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s United
Church of Christ north of Eyota, with Rev, Jean Boese officiating. Burial is at
Grandview Memorial Gardens in Rochester. Visitation is Friday, 5-8 p.m. at
Schad & Zabel Funeral Home in Eyota and 1 hour prior to the service at the
church on Saturday.
Memorials are preferred to St. Paul’s United Church of Christ or the
Possibilities Foundation in Rochester.
