Helen A. “Dolly” Bates, 90, passed away at Mayo Clinic Hospital, St. Mary’s
Campus-Rochester, on Sunday, July 15, 2018. She was born at home in
Fairmont, MN on June 1, 1928, to Edward and Agnes (Schmek) Wade. She
graduated from Fairmont High School. She then attended nursing school at St.
Mary’s Hospital in Rochester and received her Registered Nursing Degree.
On Oct. 5, 1957, Helen married William Bates at St. Pius Catholic Church in
Rochester. They resided in Plainview and continued operating Bates Variety and
Laundry Mat until 1980. Helen was employed for many years at St. Mary’s
hospital. She worked during the Polio epidemic. Following her retirement in 1992
she continued her association with Mayo Clinic through the Simulated Patient
Program.
Helen had a zest for life and enjoyed being busy and spending time with friends
and family. She was a member of St. Joachim Catholic Church and the Catholic
Daughters; Garden Club, Exercise Club, and the Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She
enjoyed traveling, painting, bowling and sewing.
She is survived by one daughter, Barb(Ken) Cummings of Stacy; three
grandchildren, Elle(Tim) Dobosenski, Riki and Tomy Cummings; three great
grandchildren, Grayson, Tanner and Blake; one sister, Mary Lou Musser of
White Fish, MT; one brother, Major Frank Wade of San Antonio TX and many
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William (Sept. 21, 2012), parents
and brothers Art, Paul, Billy and Harold.
Funeral Mass is Thursday July 19th, 11am at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church in
Plainview, with Father William Becker officiating. Burial is at the St. Joachim’s
Catholic Cemetery. Visitation is Wednesday July
18
th, 5-7 p.m. at Schad and
Zabel Funeral Home in Plainview and one hour prior to the service at the church
on Thursday.
Memorials are preferred to fund a new play set at Green Prairie Place assisted
living.
