Helen A. Simon, age 90, of Plainview, died Saturday, May 25, 2013 at St. Mary’s Hospital in
Rochester.
Helen A. Hemmestvedt was born April 15, 1923 in Goodridge, MN to Torjus and Annie
(Haugen) Hemmestvedt. Helen attended school in Crookston and graduated from the Thief
River Falls High School. She went on to attend the Minnesota School of Business in
On October 27, 1945 she married Elmer Simon at Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis.
They then moved to the Simon family farm south of Altura. She and Elmer farmed, retiring in
1975. They moved to Plainview in 1999. Helen had been a resident at St. Isidore Health
Center of Greenwood Prairie in Plainview for the past three years.
Helen was a member of Jehovah Lutheran Church in Altura. She was a 4-H leader and a
member of the Minnesota Holstein Association. She enjoyed sewing, golfing, traveling, playing
cards, and her flowers.
She is survived by her husband, Elmer, of Plainview, two daughters; Candy (Chuck) Shada of
Anamosa, Iowa and Cathy Radel of Plainview. She is also survived by Grandchildren; Conrad
Shada, Nathan (Angie) Radel, Chris (Kristin) Radel and Great-Grandchildren; Ellie and Grant
Radel. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, one brother; Truman, and two sisters;
Valla and Joyce.
The Funeral Service is Thursday, May 30, 11 am at Jehovah Lutheran Church in Altura, MN
with Rev. Michael Lindemann and Rev. John Derme officiating. Burial is in the Church
Cemetery. Visitation is Wednesday, 5-8 pm at the Jehovah Lutheran Church and 1 hour prior
to the service at the church on Thursday.
