Jean Cynthia Speedling, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away on April 6, 2026, at the age of 92, a few days short of 93, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on April 19, 1933, to Frank and Myrtle (Cox) Tentis. Jean grew up in Kellogg, where she graduated from Kellogg High School in 1951 and was salutatorian. She married Cpl. Robert Speedling, on June 7 of the same year. Their journey took them to Alabama while Robert was in the service, and then back to the Conception area of rural Kellogg. Bob and Jean farmed with Jean's parents for many years, eventually buying her family's farm. In 1985, they made Kellogg their home, and in 1997, to be closer to her children, Jean moved to Plainview, where she continued to touch the lives of many.
Jean was passionate about her community, serving six years on the Kellogg City Council, where her contributions included the vital addition of the city sewer. A devoted member of her faith, she attended Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Agnes Catholic Church, and St. Joachim Catholic Church, and was actively involved in the Altar Society at all three churches. Moreover, she dedicated an impressive 73 years to the American Legion Auxiliary, displaying her commitment to service and fellowship. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America.
An avid cook, baker, gardener, seamstress and beautician, cutting hair for her children, neighbors and grandchildren. At age 42, she went back to school at Winona Technical to become a cosmetologist. When she wasn't spending time with family, she sewed bandages for Uni-Patch, now Medtronic and sewed baptismal gowns for the Catholic church.
Jean found joy in the simplest of pleasures. She loved dancing, especially with Bob at many wedding dances at the American Legion in Kellogg. She and Bob made three-wheeler trips throughout the upper Midwest with their friends from Kellogg. Her adventurous spirit led her on memorable trips to the Holy Land, Medjugorje, and Rome. She also traveled to Hawaii, California, West Virginia, Boston, a bus trip to Washington DC and Williamsburg, Florida, New Orleans and Branson, MO. Her favorite color was purple. Above all, Jean treasured the time spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who were her pride and joy. Jean will always be remembered for her warm heart, her incredible haircuts, and the countless ways she made those around her feel loved.
Jean is survived by her children Wayne (Carol) Speedling, Wanda (Roger Tatge) Graff, Susan (Tom) Holst, Greg (Diane) Speedling, Doug (Kay) Speedling, Donna (Gregory) Neumann, Ike (Jeannie) Speedling, Neil (Cherie) Speedling, Dave (Shelly) Speedling, Mary (Chip) Weimer, Frank (Ursula) Speedling, Theresa (Scott) Evers; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Robert in 1989; 3 sisters and 1 brother; daughter-in-law Judy Speedling; son-in-law Tom Graff; grandchildren Jennifer Vannelli and David Neumann; and great grandchildren Lowell Vannelli and Natalie Tarbell. She was also preceded in death by her beloved dog of 18 years, Teddie.
