James E. Nelson, 74 of Eyota died Wednesday (February 20, 2019) at Seasons Hospice in Rochester. He was born in Hayfield, MN June 14, 1944 to the late Spencer and Locella (Baumann) Nelson. Jim lived in Lansing, MN until age 5 when the family moved to Byron. He graduated from Byron High School in 1962. On February 22, 1963 he married Phyllis Bryan in Rochester. They lived in Rochester until 1975 when they moved to Eyota. Survivors include his wife Phyllis, daughter Christine Nelson of Rochester, son Anthony(Linda) Nelson of Eyota, daughter Samantha(Cory) Kubista of Lake City and daughter Stephanie(Scot) Field of Eyota. Six grandchildren, Ashley Nelson, Joshua Nelson, Madison Field, Allison Kubista, Lindsay Field, and Drew Kubista; Three brothers, Richard (Clara) Nelson, Bruce Nelson and Jeff Nelson all of Rochester; Two sisters, Barbara Austin of Rochester and Susan Crawford of Byron. He was preceded in death by his parents. Jim worked at Kaehler, Crenlo, Glendenning and other trucking companies. He was a School Bus Inspector for 22½ years for the state of Minnesota until his retirement in 2006. Jim enjoyed lawn mowing, fishing, casinos, attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, busch light, and especially spending time with his family. Memorial will be held at the Eyota American Legion on Sunday, March 10th from 1:00 – 4:00, with a short memorial service at 2:15 pm. Interment at Oak Grove Cemetery, Eyota, will be at a later date.
