John Francis Hall, Plainview, passed away peacefully at Golden Living Center- Whitewater Monday, May 9, 2016, with his family at his side. He was born in rural Lake City, MN on February 15, 1920 to Thomas R. and Mary Agnes (McDonough) Hall. In 1922 they moved to a farm near Theilman, MN. He attended country school #58 thru the eighth grade and at age 16 joined the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) in Lake City, MN for 2 years, earning a 1 year vocational certificate. He spent 6 months working in Enterprise, Oregon building trails in the mountains for the park systems and fighting forest fires at the Snake River Gorge in Idaho. He then returned to MN to finish out his service. He worked for the railroad and helped on the family farm until August, 1942 when he left for service in the Army Air Corps. He landed in Casablanca Christmas Eve and served the next 3 years in WW II in the North African Campaign, marching thru Sicily, Italy and France. He was in the Battle of Kasserine Pass. He earned the rank of Sergeant and received an honorable discharge returning home in August 1945. On September 10, 1945 he married Maxine Spring at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church in Plainview, MN. They farmed near Theilman on the “home place” where he grew up until September, 1956 when they moved to the Neumann farm east of Plainview, farming until retiring in September, 1982 and moving into Plainview. Maxine passed away May 14, 2013. He was a member of the Plainview American Legion for over 50 years and a member of St. Joachim’s Catholic Church in Plainview. He enjoyed fishing and more fishing, hunting, trapping in the earlier years, reading (especially the Post Bulletin and Plainview papers from front to back), National Geographic and atlases. He also enjoyed watching country music videos, Hee Haw, Wheel of Fortune, baking, gardening, fixing anything broken, relaxing on the deck with Miller and SC, chocolate, more chocolate and popcorn. He loved traveling to Oregon. He will be sadly missed by six children, Diane (Gene) McNallan of Kellogg, Ron (Marti) Hall of Winnepeg, Canada, Mark (Joan) Hall of Kellogg, Marie (Kim) Kroening of St. Charles, Scott (Nancy) Hall of Redmond, Oregon, Kris (Al) Rustad of Trempealeau, WI; sixteen grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; one brother, Julian (Janice) Hall of Aransas Pass, TX; Sister-in-Laws, Bernice (Donald) Hall of Rochester, Marlys (Richard) Bartz of Elgin, Evy (Sonny) Spring of Plainview; and forty nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine, his parents, one great grandson, Arien Hall, six brothers, Leo, Vic, James William, Gerald, and Donnie, and one sister, Carnetta Melendy. The funeral mass will be Monday, May 16 at 11 a.m. at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church in Plainview with Father Robert Meyer officiating. Burial will be at St. Joachim’s Catholic Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Plainview American Legion. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Sunday, May 15, at Schad & Zabel Funeral Home in Plainview and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
