John B. Sloan Jr. was called to his heavenly home on May 12, 2015 at St. Isidore Health
Center of Greenwood Prairie in Plainview.
John Benet Sloan was born October 30, 1925 to John Benet Sloan Sr. and Ruth
(Pilgrim) Sloan at Ladysmith, Wisconsin. John Sloan Sr. and his parents homesteaded
at Exeland, Wisconsin. Ruth Pilgrim was a school teacher there. John lived the first 5
years in Exeland, WI., then with his parents and three brothers they moved to
Southeastern Minnesota during the depression. He attended many country schools. He
was baptized and confirmed at the Methodist church in Hokah, Minnesota. John worked
for Carl and Hazel Hartman and went to high school in Houston, Minnesota.
In 1947 John took a short course at University of Minnesota for Dairy Herd Improvement
supervisor, which he did for 5 years. He went farming in partnership with Philip Green in
1951.
On September 3, 1953, John married Dorine Schulz at Immanuel Lutheran Church in
Plainview. They were blessed with 5 sons; Jerry, Darvey, Joel, Robert and Gary. John
and Dorine farmed together for the next 60 plus years.
John served on the Plainview Milk Products Board 33 years, Soil and Water
Conservation 37 years, was a charter member of Whitewater Watershed board, First
National Bank of Plainview Board of Directors for 29 years, Immanuel Lutheran Church
Financial Secretary 21 years, High Plains Co-op 15 years, County and State American
Dairy Association, Hope Clinic, Southeast Farm Management, PEDCO, FFA advisory,
4H adult leader and Farm Bureau.
John with Harold Ellinghuysen co-organized the JD Club with 14 farmers to keep the
John Deere dealership in Plainview with Tom Wozney as manager.
John enjoyed farming, auctions and John Deere machinery. The Lord blessed him with
a good wife and family with many others things.
He is survived by his wife Dorine of Plainview; sons, Darvey of Plainview, Joel (Cheryse)
of Mabel, MN., Robert of Plainview, Gary (Donna) of Lake Elmo, MN; grandchildren,
Matthew (Molly) Sloan, Carlena (Patrick) Gallagher, Chelsey, Nicholas, Jacquelyn, Dena
and Teagan Sloan; great grandchildren, Lila, Taylor, Reagan and Kolton; Brothers,
Ernest (Donna) of Hokah, MN., Lynn of Red Wing, MN.; sister, Mary (Lyle) Wehrs of
Plainview and sister in law, Valrie Sloan of Onalaska, WI.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 son, Jerry John, 1 brother, Glen.
Funeral Service is Saturday, May 16, 2015, 11 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in
Plainview with Pastor Ron Prigge and Pastor Dick Hegel officiating. Burial will be at
Greenwood Cemetery in Plainview. Visitation is Friday 5-8 p.m. at Schad & Zabel
Funeral Home in Plainview and 1 hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Isidore Health Center of Greenwood
Prairie.
