DC where she attended Western High School and worked in the library. In her junior
year of high school, they moved to Manassas, VA where she attended a country school.
Following high school, she attended a business school where she learned stenography,
shorthand, and typing. Her uncle helped her to get a job with the Library of Congress in
Washington, DC.
It was working on a special project for the Library of Congress that brought her to the
University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In June 1943, she met Oakley Theophil
Neau at a dance for the servicemen in Ann Arbor. They were married on March 21, 1944
in the St. Mary’s rectory. They moved to St. Louis and Joplin, Missouri where she worked
as Oakley’s secretary. Later they moved to Lake Jackson near Manassas, VA where
Judy would play the organ for a small Catholic Church. Oakley’s jobs kept the family
moving from the East coast to Hawaii and back to the East coast, eventually returning
them to Ann Arbor. Judy was very active in St. Francis of Assisi Church as a sacristan
but her primary role was as a wife and mother. She loved to dance, knit, sew, play cards,
read books and visit with friends. Their family became members of Christ the King Parish
in Ann Arbor for many years. After the death of her husband, she moved to Plainview,
Minnesota in May of 2001. She lived in an independent apartment for 11 years at Green
Prairie Place, where she made many new friends. In March of 2012, she moved in with
her daughter Barbara and her husband and family.
Judy is survived by 6 of her children and their spouses, Theresa (William) Champion,
Patricia (Steven) Waters, Steven, Gregory (Mary) Neau, Michele (Gary) Czupinski, and
Barbara (Robert) Ferk. She has 35 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by her husband and 6 of her children Oakley Jr., Robert, and Philip
and three lost in miscarriages, six grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Friday July 5th at 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Schad & Zabel Funeral
Home in Plainview, MN. A Rosary will be recited at 7:45 p.m. Visitation will be held at Nie
Funeral Home, 2400 Carpenter Rd. in Ann Arbor, Michigan at a later date. A Mass of
Christian Burial will be held at Christ the King Parish in Ann Arbor, Michigan with visitation
one hour before. Burial will take place at Washtenong Memorial Park and Mausoleum
located at 3771 Whitmore Lake Rd, Ann Arbor, MI. Funeral arrangements were made by
Schad & Zabel Funeral Homes of Plainview, MN and Nie Funeral Home, in Ann Arbor, MI.
