Kathleen Anne McFarland, age 81, died peacefully at her home on the farm,
Wednesday, June 13, 2018, near Elgin, Minnesota. Kathleen was born July 7, 1936
at rural Viola, Minnesota, daughter of Ruben and Anne Kriesel Bartz.
Kathleen graduated from Elgin High School, class of 1954.
Kathleen married Robert P. Culbertson, November 5, 1955 at Trinity Lutheran
Church of Elgin, Minnesota. Robert passed away from a farm accident April 4,
1966.
Kathleen married William A. McFarland, April 17, 1971 at Immanuel Lutheran
Church of Potsdam. William passed away on June 26, 2012.
Kathleen was a member of the Elgin American Legion Auxiliary Unit 573 and served
on the local, county and district levels. She organized the Elgin Memorial Day
Service for many years. Dairy Farming was a big part of the McFarland-Culbertson
life. Kathleen milked cows on her farm until she was 75 years old. Kathleen and
the family were always pleased to host dairy tours for Kingdom Kids of Rochester
and the Olmsted, Wabasha and Winona County 4-H Dairy Judging teams. In 2005,
the McFarlands hosted Olmsted County Breakfast on the Farm. The highlight was
remembering how appreciative the community was.
Kathleen served on the Peoples Energy Cooperative Trust, Operation Round Up
Board of Directors for six years.
Kathleen enjoyed her later years with her best friend, Jim Hanson, socializing,
dancing, meeting new people, and enjoying many local events.
Kathleen is survived by five children, Patti (Paul) Tackmann of Lake City, Kristi
Pesch of Elgin, Darci (Scott) Fenske of Elgin, Scott (Nicole) Culbertson of Pine
Island, and James McFarland of Elgin; 14 Grandchildren, Christopher (Katie)
Tackmann of Hudson, Wisconsin, Andrew (Ashlee) Tackmann of Owatonna,
Nicholas (Megan) Tackmann of Faribault, Alicia (Daniel) Prihoda of Victoria, Joseph
(Lauren) Pesch of St. Helena, California, Kathryn (Kyle) McKenzie of Owatonna,
Thomas Pesch of Chicago, Illinois, John Fenske of Rockford, Illinois, Matthew
Fenske of St. Paul, Brooke Fenske of Omaha, Nebraska, Anna (Ryan) Culbertson
of Sturtevant, Wisconsin, Emma Culbertson, Abby Gushulak , and Tessa Gushulak
all of Pine Island and sixteen greatgrandchildren. She is also survived by one
brother, Richard E. Bartz (Marlys) of Rochester and one sister, Ann Sharon (Gary)
Goodwin of Belle Plaine, special friend Jim Hanson, daughter-in-love Tina Larson.
Preceeding her in death were husbands William McFarland and Robert Culbertson,
and son-in-law Daniel G. Pesch,
Funeral service will be Monday, June 18th, 11a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church of
Potsdam with Pastor Dale Kohrs officiating. Visitation will be at Schad and Zabel in
Plainview on Sunday, June 17 from 5-8p.m. and one hour prior to the church
service.
In lieu of flowers, family prefers memorials to Viola Gopher Count, Immanuel
Lutheran Church of Potsdam, and Olmsted County 4-H.
