Kenneth “Ken” A. Schmidt, 85, of Elgin, died Friday, November 29, 2019 at St. Mary’ s Hospital in Rochester surrounded by his loving family. Ken was born January 16, 1934 in Rochester to Arthur and Inez (Weiland) Schmidt. He graduated from Elgin High School in 1951. Ken farmed a few years with his father and then joined the US Army serving from 1954-1956. On June 16, 1956 he married Mona Sawyer at the Methodist Church in Elgin. They farmed west of Elgin retiring in 1996. In retirement he and Mona traveled and wintered in Arizona. He enjoyed gardening and all types of music. While still in high school, Ken played in the Jolly Bohemians Band until joining the Army. He is survived by his wife Mona of Elgin: children, Marie (Gary) Lipp and Diane Schmidt both of Rochester, Steven (Vicki) Schmidt of Elgin, Thomas (Beth) Schmidt of Stewartville; 8 grandchildren, Justin (Alaina) Lipp, Alyssa (Dustin) Lipp, Joanna (Todd) Hite, Joshua (Lauren) Schmidt, Stephanie Schmidt, Trevor (Ari) Schmidt, Caleb (Alyssa) Schmidt and Colton Schmidt; 2 great-granddaughters, Margot Lipp and Emmaline Schmidt; and 1 sister, Verna Petty of Champlin, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents and 1 brother-in-law. Funeral service is Wednesday, December 4, 11: 00 a.m. at Peace United Methodist Church between Plainview and Elgin with Pastor Cheryl Nymann officiating. Burial is at the Elgin Cemetery. Visitation is Tuesday, 4-8 p.m. at Schad & Zabel Funeral Home in Plainview and 1 hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. A special thank you to Dr. Fletcher “Buzz” Miller, cardiologist and friend for 37 years.  Also thanks to the Visiting Angels caregivers (especially Kathryn) for the last 7 months, as well as the Joseph 3B nursing staff and Med 3 medical team at Saint Marys.
