LaVonne Jean Johnson, 91, died peacefully, Tuesday, February 24, 2015, at Samaritan Bethany Home on Eighth in Rochester, with family by her side. LaVonne was born to Peter and Dagmar (Anderson) Johnson in rural Graettinger, Iowa on July 28, 1923. LaVonne married Maynard Johnson in Emmetsburg, Iowa on January 24, 1940 and began their journey together for a total of 66 years. Maynard died on February 2, 2006. They farmed for 32 years, first in rural Graettinger, Iowa, then Cylinder, Iowa and settled in rural Eyota, MN in 1958. They retire from farming in 1972 and moved into the city of Eyota. LaVonne had worked at Woolworth’s, Weber & Judd, Libby’s and the Eyota Locker. She was a very active member of the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Eyota. She also enjoyed the Rural-Robbins, various card clubs and the Ladies Auxiliary at the Eyota American Legion. Her many interests included baking, playing cards, bingo, reading, doing puzzles, and very much enjoyed going to dances. Above all, her greatest joy was spending time with her family and friends. She dearly loved all of her children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren and supporting them in all their endeavors, LaVonne was a kind and gentle soul, a great matriarch of her family and will be greatly missed. LaVonne is survived by her children; Dean (Karen) of South Bend, IN, Gary (Kathy) of Urbandale, Iowa, Darrell (Shirley) of Eyota, Darwin (Glenda) of Pequot Lakes, MN, Randy (Vicki) of Chatfield, Cindy (Frank) Urban of Eyota, Marty (Nan) of Rochester; 18 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren and sister in laws, Betty Miller and Martha Miller. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Maynard, brothers Ervin (Doris), Carmen (Gertie), Martin (Carrie), Richard, twin brother, LeRoy , sister, Florence (Alfred) Wichman, grandchildren, Devon Johnson and Donnie Smith. A special thank you, to the staff at Samaritan Bethany and Season’s Hospice for all their wonderful care. Funeral Mass is Saturday, February 28, 11:00 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Eyota with Father Kurt Farrell officiating. Burial is at the Holy Redeemer Catholic Cemetery. Visitation is Friday, 5-8 p.m. at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Eyota and 1 hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. A vigil service will be at 8 p.m. Friday at the church.
