Leonard Albert Hammel (93) died peacefully the morning of January 20, 2019 at Green Prairie Care Center in Plainview, MN. Leonard was born on January 28, 1925, to Louis Hammel and Minnie (Suter), the youngest of seven children, at the family farm north of Eyota, MN.  He grew up a quarter mile east of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ where he was baptized, confirmed and served faithfully his entire life.  He attended County School Dist. 105 and then Eyota High School, graduating in 1942.  He served in the Army, 1945-1946 in the Army of Occcupation in Okinawa, Japan.  He married Inez Ihrke on October 28, 1948.  They farmed north of Eyota their entire lives.  His wife Inez died in 2011 and Leonard contined living on the farm.  He lived at Arbor Gardens in Eyota for a time until moving to Plainview in 2017. In his early years of farming he earned many soil conservation awards. He was active in civic affairs his entire life, serving on many boards:  Eyota Creamery, DHIA, Farm Bureau, American Dairy Association.  He served for eighteen years on the Board of Directors of People Co-op.  He also served his church, St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, in many capacities.  He was a good ballplayer in his youth and took up golf in later life.  He and his wife enjoyed attending many athletic events and concerts of their children and grandchildren. He is survived by his sons: Kevin, Bill (Melody) and Warren (Cheri) and 11 grandchildren Amy, Damon, Erik, Erin, Jenna, Michael, Annie, Emily, Caleb, Grace, and Coltan, 12 great-grand children, 3 great-great-grandchildren, and a sister-in-law Gladys Loucks, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceeded in death by his three brothers and three sisters; Carl, Lena (Bierbaum) , Paul, Herman, Rose (Neumann), and Frieda (Ostermann); and daughter-in-law Connie. Services are Friday, January 25, 2019, 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, north of Eyota, with Rev.
