Lucy Rose (Graner) Tucker, 86, of Rochester died at home on January 10,
2016, after a brief battle with cancer.
Lucy was born on June 29, 1929, in Highland Township, Wabasha County to
Robert and Stella Graner. In her youth, Lucy attended Smithfield Country
School – a 2 room school – and graduated from Plainview High School in
1947, where she was part of the Homecoming Royalty for two years and
participated in Plainview’s Memorial Day activities reciting The Gettysburg
Address in honor of our nation’s veterans.
Lucy married Charles Wendell Tucker on February 14, 1950, at St. Joachim’s
Catholic Church in Plainview. After living primarily in southeastern Minnesota,
they settled in Rochester in 1961 and moved their young family to a hobby
farm in Oronoco Township in 1967, where they raised a wide assortment of
farm animals and showed registered Arabian horses with the Pine Island
Riders Club. Charlie and Lucy enjoyed spending time with their country
neighbors, who frequently could be found around Lucy’s kitchen table on
Saturday mornings for a breakfast of pancakes and bacon, a fresh cup of
coffee, and friendly conversation. Lucy will always be remembered for her
hospitality and her easy smile. Friendships came easy for her.
Upon retirement, Charlie and Lucy purchased land on Tom Lake near
Hovland, Minnesota, and built a cabin where they were surrounded by nature’s
beauty. When Tom Lake failed to challenge their fishing skills, Charlie and
Lucy headed north to Canada with family and friends to fish the lakes across
the province of Ontario. Locally, home was an RV used to escape Minnesota
winters and, later, a maintenance-free townhouse in Rochester that allowed
them to travel throughout the United States.
Lucy was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and two brothers,
Edwin and Donald Graner; and twin infant granddaughters. She is survived by
her four daughters whom she loved dearly, Teresa (David) Silker of
Rochester, Julie (Stacy) Miller of Plainview, Jane Tucker of Rochester, and
Mary (Bill) Amann of St. Paul, as well as two sisters, Marian Wegner and Rita
Buegler, both of Rochester, and two sisters-in-law, Carol Graner of Plainview
and Nancy Tucker of Rochester. Lucy’s legacy proudly includes 10
grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 16th, 11:00 am, at Pax
Christi Catholic Church in Rochester. Visitation will be held at the church one
hour prior to the service. A private burial will occur at Greenwood Cemetery in
Plainview, Minnesota. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Seasons
Hospice of Rochester or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
