LuVerne Albert Klassen, 92, of rural Kellogg, MN passed away peacefully Friday
LuVerne Albert Klassen was born February 14, 1922 in Highland Township, Wabasha
County, MN to Clarence and Amelia (Peters) Klassen. He attended the Smithfield
Country School until the eighth grade. On September 18, 1945 he married Juliann
Wolfe at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Conception, MN. Reception was
at the Henry and Lavina Wolfe's farm in Highland Township, Plainview, MN LuVerne
lived his entire lifetime in the Kellogg and Plainview areas, and was a member of St.
Joachim’s Catholic Church in Plainview, MN. He enjoyed all sports: softball fast pitch
pitcher, fishing, hunting, skiing, ice skating, riding ponies and horses. He was a
bareback rider and won many races at the County fairs (16 – 1st Place, 1 – 2nd
Place, and 1- 3rd Place). He was a member of the Highland Greenwood Hustlers 4-H
Club for 10 years, Kellogg Sportsman Club, Wabasha Izaak Club, Rochester Eagles
Club, Farmers Union, Plainview Lions Club, Wabasha County Special Deputy,
Amateur Motocycle Association and Fire Warden.
He retired at the age 76. He farmed, hauled peas and corn for Lakeside for 20 years
and was the founder of Midway Sportsmen's Club which later became Midway
Recreation Park. In 1993, LuVerne was the first smoke free facility in the area.
Midway held many memorable wedding receptions and dances until the last dance on
Friday, September 2, 1994. In addition to the Midway bar and dance hall, LuVerne
started Midway Motocross Track in 1976. He is still waiting for the Vikings to win a
Super Bowl. He was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a great
friend to many.
LuVerne is survived by his daughter, Cindy (Jack) Stamschror of Kellogg, MN; three
grandchildren, Jessica (Ryan) Hammell of Decorah, IA, Kimberly (Seth) Ihrke of Elgin,
MN, and Amy (Richard) Taylor of Plainview, MN; eight great-grandchildren, John
“Jack” Hammell, Taylor Hammell, Jayden Ihrke, Kadence Ihrke, Reid Ihrke, Autumn
Taylor, Chace Taylor, and Blake Taylor; one brother, Marvin (Belvey) Klassen of
Wabasha, MN; extended family Linda (Alan) Simanovski and children Anthony (Kayla
Brown), Lucas, and Aaron of Annandale, MN, He was preceded in death by Juliann
Klassen, his parents, one brother Kenneth Klassen and special friends Cleone Ingalls
and Virginia Feils.
Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 22nd, at St. Joachim’s Catholic
Church in Plainview, MN with Father Robert Meyer officiating. A private family burial
will be in the St. Agnes Cemetery in Kellogg on a later date.
Friends and family may visit from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 21st, at the
Schad and Zabel Funeral Home, in Plainview, MN and one hour prior to the service at
the church on Friday.
