Marie Elizabeth Undeberg

A funeral mass celebrating the life of Marie Elizabeth Undeberg will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 16, 2024, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Eyota, MN, with Father Jonathan Fasnacht officiating.  Visitation will be one hour before, with burial after the service at Holy Redeemer Catholic Cemetery.

Marie was born the youngest of five children on June 19, 1929 in Rochester, MN.  Her family relocated to Fargo, North Dakota in 1936 where she attended Sacred Heart Academy.  After graduation she worked at the Fargo Bank and at Bell Telephone.

She met Helmer Theodore Undeberg in 1947 on a blind date.  They were wed at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Fargo on December 16, 1950, and were together for 65 years.  They traveled the Harness Horse Racing Circuit in Canada, the upper Midwest, California, and the Eastern United States until settling in the Rochester, MN area in 1959.

In 1967 Marie and Helmer moved to rural Eyota, MN, where they lived for 53 years and raised five children. Marie worked for International Transport from 1966 to 1978, then shifted into social services work with Family Services Rochester until retiring in her mid-seventies.  Her greatest joys were her grandkids and spending time with family on the Mississippi River.  She also enjoyed quilting and was a member in several groups including Viola Gopher Gals Olmsted County Extension Group, St. Mary’s church circle, and was active in the Winona Council of Catholic Women.  She had a deep love for her Church and strong commitment to her Catholic beliefs.  After her husband Helmer passed away in 2015, Marie moved to an apartment at Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield, MN, where she passed away peacefully surrounded in family love on May 10, 2024.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Helmer Undeberg; her parents, Howard and Barbara Sanders; twin brothers, James and John; and sisters Barbara and Evelyn.  Marie is survived by her children, Richard (Connie) of Chatfield, MN; Michael (Diane) of Rochester, MN; Mark of Sequim, WA; Ruth (Jay) McCready of Worthington, MN; Jean (Ron) Mulholland of Plainview, MN.  She was blessed with sixteen grandchildren, thirty-five great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren.

Memorials are preferred to Holy Redeemer Church of Eyota, MN or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105.
