Merle K. Schreiber, 73, of rural Plainview, died at his home on Tuesday, June 27, 2017. Merle was born April 19, 1944 in St. Charles to Norman and Thelma (Fabian) Schreiber. At the age of 9, the family moved to a farm NW of Plainview. He attended school in Plainview. On May 1, 1965 he married Jean Stevenson at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Plainview. They lived in Elgin for two years and then in April, 1968, they moved to the family farm NW of Plainview, farming with his brother Carl until 1996. At that time they moved to a farm north of Plainview, retiring in 2009. Merle was a member of the Plainview-Elgin Saddle Club. He enjoyed working with his Belgian horses; training, parades, showing and carriage rides. He was also a member of the North Star Trail and Tree Coon Club. He was an avid deer, turkey and coon hunter. He enjoyed fishing and loved spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Jean of Plainview; children, Corey (Juliana) Schreiber of Plainview, Terri (Mark) Horsman of Plainview, Patti (Jeff) Hoffman of Plainview, Lonni (Kurt) Kautz of Millville and Traci (Seth) Wolf of Plainview; 12 grandchildren, Sienna, Walker, Garrett, Brandon, Kirsten, Derrick, Amanda, Tylor, Jacob, Joseph, Carter and Coy; 3 great-grandchildren, Carsen, Harper, Clay and 2 great-grandchildren that are soon expected; 1 sister, Delores (Roy) Smith, 2 brothers, Carl (June) Schreiber and Merlin (Marian) Schreiber and brother-in-law, Duane Schulz, all of Plainview. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 grandchildren, Avirlin and Thelma Schreiber, his sister, Dorothy Schulz and Niece, Barb Smith. Funeral service is Monday, July 3, 11:00 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Plainview with Rev. Phil Augustine officiating. Burial is at the Little Valley Cemetery south of Plainview. Visitation is Sunday 4-8 p.m. at Schad & Zabel Funeral Home in Plainview and 1 hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
