Mervin Calvert Ellis passed away November 24, 2020. Mervin was known as Mort in his hometown of Eyota. He was born October 3, 1927 in Norfolk, Nebraska to Francis and Luella Ellis. He was the third child in the family with two older sisters, Frances and Maxine. They soon moved to Viola where the family farmed and a fourth child Myron was born in 1930. His mother, Luella passed in 1944 and Mort enlisted in the Navy and served f rom 1945-1948. When he returned home, he worked odd jobs. Helping farmers and seasonal jobs. In 1954 he married Gretchen Marie Ellis July 30 at the Little Brown Church in the vale in Iowa and made their home in Eyota. The couple had 3 children. Mort drove milk truck, and school bus.  Bus driving was his most memorable job. He loved sports and driving the teams to the game locations. He stayed in touch with many of the students through their adult lives. He continued to follow high school sports with his children. Occasionally, he would bend the ear of a coach or referee. He and his wife continued thought the summer following ballgames of their children. Mervin worked at Crenlo for nine years and finished his working years doing railroad maintenance. He continued following high school sports and even travelling to Wisconsin to support grandsons playing hockey. In his free time, he enjoyed gardening and yardwork. In his final months since he no longer was driving, he used his Cub Cadet riding mower to visit the Country Cafe where he was treated like family by his "girls" Amanda and Bry. He was always greeted by his granddaughter Gina when he went home. He will be missed by many. He was preceded in death by his wife Gretchen in 12/2018. He leaves behind his children; Linda Cure of Eyota, Jeff (Carrie) of Byron, Tom (Terry) of Rochester. Seven grandchildren, Justin and Shane Cure, Westin Ellis and Danna, Alex, Mya and Adrian Willery and three great-grandchildren; Landon, Anna and Cooper Cure. A private burial will be held Saturday December 5, at Oak Hill Cemetery, Viola, with military graveside rites conducted by the Eyota Legion. Schad & Zabel Funeral Home in Eyota is assisting the family with arrangements.
