Michael John Rathbun

Michael John Rathbun, age 54, passed away after a courageous battle with
cancer on Thursday July 19th, 2018 with family by his side at his home in
Plainview, MN. Mike, affectionately known by family and friends as Mikey or Big
Mike, was born February 26th, 1964 in Rochester MN. Mike graduated from
Chosen Valley High School in Chatfield MN in 1982. He went on to further his
education later in life at Winona State University with a degree in Education and
a Master’s degree in mathematics from St. Cloud State University.
Early in Mike’s career he taught high school mathematics in Kauai, Hawaii,
Grand Meadow High School, John Marshall High School and Elgin Millville High
School. He then spent the last 12 years teaching inmates at the Minnesota
Department of Corrections in St. Cloud and Faribault MN.
Mike was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous for the last 28 years.
Mike centered his life around his family, his fellow “friends of Bill “and being
Papa. He enjoyed riding motorcycle, going to auctions, working on anything
mechanical (especially old trucks) and playing Texas hold’em. Mike could most
often be found in the summer riding a lawn mower and taking care of the farms
of his dear friends Ollie and Bru.
Mike is survived by his wife Bridget, step-daughters Stephanie (Andy) Barnes
and Melissa (Terry) Krusmark, 4 grandchildren Julia, Miles, Brynn and Kennedy
all of Plainview MN, 7 siblings, Joan Lex of Spring Valley, MN, Robert (Alita)
Rathbun of Elkton, S.D., Chuck (Audrey) Rathbun of Rochester, MN, Steven
(Vicki) Rathbun of Rochester MN, Cyrilla (Michael) Trende of Preston MN,
Christine Rathbun of Spring Valley, MN and Julia (Ron) Harris of Stewartville
MN. He was preceded in death by his parents Cyril R. and Rosella Rathbun,
brother Victor Eugene Riddle and brother-in-law Loren Lex.
The Funeral service is Wednesday July 25th, 11 a.m. at the Community
Presbyterian Church in Plainview, MN with Pastor John Curtiss officiating.
Visitation at Schad and Zabel Funeral Home in Plainview on Tuesday, July 24th
from 5-8 pm and one hour prior to the church service.
In lieu of flowers family prefers memorials.
