surrounded by her family, at Seasons Hospice in Rochester.
Norma J. Deming was born April 2, 1921 in Elgin, MN to Thomas and Florence
(DeWitz) Richardson. She graduated from Elgin High School and Dr. Charlie Mayo
gave the commencement address.
After high school she lived in Red Wing, MN and worked at the St. James Hotel. She
then moved to Rochester and worked at the Mayo Clinic. She married Ralph G.
Deming on November 27, 1944 in Plainview. They lived and worked on the Deming
family farm NW of Plainview. After selling the farm they moved to Plainview in 1961.
Norma worked at Mabel’s Tip Top Café, the drug store, where she ran the soda
fountain. She also worked for Dr. James Stucky, and Peoples Natural Gas in
Plainview and Rochester.
She was a member of St. Joachim’s Catholic Church since marriage and prior to
that was a member of the Methodist Church in Elgin.
Norma is survived by her son, Richard of Minneapolis and her daughter, Judy (Jim)
Eversman of Kellogg, granddaughters, Emily Kroening (Enrique Figueroa) of
Ventura, CA, Carly (Brock) Palmer of Elgin, Katie Eversman of Reads Landing and
Annie Eversman of St. Louis Park, two sisters, Elithe “Tootie” (Ralph) Firzlaff of
Plainview and Ruth Ann Dessner of Elgin, one brother, Glenn (Gaynel) Richardson
of Rochester, Sister-in-laws, Ruby Richardson of Rochester and Nelly Richardson
of Pine Island, one great-granddaughter, Kaelyn Palmer of Elgin.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, Thomas, three
brothers, Herb, Lyle and Thomas Richardson, and brother-in-law, Freddie Dessner.
Norma’s greatest joy was visiting with family and friends. She loved going out for
breakfast everyday at Subway or the café, watching the Twins and Vikings, doing
word puzzles and reading.
Funeral Mass will be Wednesday, November 13, 11 a.m. at St. Joachim’s Catholic
Church in Plainview with Father Robert Meyer officiating. Spring Burial will be at the
church cemetery. Visitation is Tuesday, 5-8 p.m. at the Schad & Zabel Funeral
Home in Plainview and 1 hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
