Richard was born September 22, 1932 in rural Dover, MN, to Anton and Gertrude
(Phillips) Asleson. He proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean
War. On May 2, 1958 he married Gerrie Nichols in Eyota. He worked for Keller
Swan Lumber of Eyota for six years, Kruse Lumber of Rochester for 31 ½ years
and for Higgins Cabinet Shop in Eyota for 10 ½ years, retiring at the end of 2007.
He was an Eyota Volunteer firefighter for 34 ½ years and a member of the Eyota
American Legion for over 50 years. He also was very active in his church, Faith
United Methodist of Eyota where he was Chairman of the Building Committee, a
trustee and an usher for many years. He helped Kevin O’Brien install all of the
lovely stained glass windows in the church. He served on the Oak Grove Cemetery
Board for many years. He and Gerrie were foster parents for Olmsted County
during the 1960’s. He enjoyed woodworking, traveling, helping his friends and
neighbors, and watching TV Westerns.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Gerrie of Eyota, his children, Crystal
(Scott) Monson of Rochester and Eric (Melanie) Asleson of Phoenix, AZ, three
grandchildren, Alyssa, Katelyn and Tylor, one great-granddaughter, Madelyn, and
two sisters; Donna Hildestad of Stewartville and Patricia Quandt of Grand Meadow;
two brothers, Archie (Marge) of Rochester and Gerald of Stewartville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother.
Funeral service is Saturday, January 3, 11:00 a.m. at Faith United Methodist
Church in Eyota with Rev. Mark Woodward officiating. Burial will be at the Oak
Grove Cemetery, Eyota. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Eyota
American Legion. Visitation is Friday, 5-8 p.m. at Schad & Zabel Funeral Home in
Eyota and 1 hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
The family prefers memorials to Faith United Methodist Church of Eyota or The
Alzheimer’s Association.
