Russell Dean Hass, 83, passed away at his home surrounded by his family, on Friday May 25th. Russ was born June 20, 1934 in Freeborn County and grew up in Alden, MN. He met and married Gwen Honnold on February 25, 1961. He and Gwen recently celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary. Russ worked for 20 years as a painter at the Rochester State Hospital. When the hospital became the federal prison, Russ began working for Knutson Decorating and Painting until his retirement. Russ loved his hobby farm and worked tirelessly on perfecting his garden, to which many enjoyed the results of his labor. For years he collected “unusual” antiques; hatchets, farming tools, sleigh bells and the like. Every year Russ ventured with his friends Al, Dennis and Virgil to Chippewa Lodge on Leech Lake to fish the beloved walleye. He was an avid sports fan and had a love for football, hockey and NASCAR. Russ is survived by his wife Gwen and 6 children; Tayna (Jim) Didier, Monti (Kim), Lori (Larry) Carpenter, Boleyn (Corey) Andrist, Russell (Donna), Garret (Joe); 9 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and brother Dale (Marsha) Hass of Rochester. He was preceded in death by a brother, sister and grandson. There will be a celebration of life on June23, Starting at 5:00 pm , at the farm in Eyota.
