Wallace G. Richardson --- Plainview A celebration of the life of Wallace G. Richardson, a longtime Plainview resident, will be at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 7, at Plainview Community Presbyterian Church with the Rev. John Curtis officiating. Mr. Richardson, 97, died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2017 at Seasons Hospice House in Rochester. Wallace G. Richardson was born Oct. 16, 1919 on a farm in Viola Township, Olmsted County to Thomas C. and Ida L. (Dickerman) Richardson. He graduated from Elgin High School in 1937 and attended Hamline University for one year. He was drafted into the United States Army on April 4, 1941 and served for more than four years during World War II, surviving more than 500 days of combat while overseas for 3 ½ years. Richardson was part of the first American Expeditionary Force. As a communications specialist, he served with the 133rd Infantry Regiment Headquarters Company of 34th (Red Bull) Infantry Division. His division participated in both the North Africa-Tunisia Campaign and the invasion of Italy. In almost two years in Italy, he participated in battles in Cassino, Anzio, Rome, Leghorn, Florence, Bologna and Po Valley. He rose to the rank of Technical Sergeant. After discharge in 1945, Richardson served as Wabasha County’s first Veterans’ Service Officer. He married Gladys G. Larson, also of Elgin, on October 27, 1945, and they lived in Wabasha. In 1947 they moved to Plainview when Mr. Richardson joined the Miller-Harrington Insurance Agency at First National Bank of Plainview (now Foresight Bank). He retired in 1983 after 35 years, but continued to serve as a bank director until 2003. During those 35 years, he invested his time and talent in a number of community organizations. He served as president of the Plainview Commercial Club, commander of the William Allen Post No. 179, a session member at Plainview Community Presbyterian Church, a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4371 and Rochester Quarterback Club. He also served on numerous community projects, including the Plainview Swimming Pool Project (treasurer) and the construction of the Piper Hills Golf Course Mr. Richardson was an avid sports fan and an accomplished golfer, a sport he played into his 90s. He was a loyal fan of high school sports, attending many games and events during his retirement years. Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Gladys; two children, Lynn A. Richardson of Minneapolis and Scott W. Richardson (Patricia) of Northfield; four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law Lillian Richardson of Daytona Beach and Agnes Larson of Red Wing. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Robert and Wayne. Friends may call from 5-7 pm, Wednesday at Schad and Zabel Funeral Home in Plainview and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
